Toys for TotsToys for tots
by: Isabelle Roy Toys for tots is a charity that collects toys for children from families who might not be able to afford it on their own. A lot of family’s can’t just get everything they want and this charity is a great way to fulfill a kid’s wish. At HMS this year the chorus department and the national junior honor society joined together to collect as many toys as possible. Many students at HMS supported and helped out with this cause. A lot of kids donated not just through the school, but also through church and other organizations. They know that experiencing that excitement on Christmas morning when you see all of the gifts that Santa left for you is a feeling no child should be deprived of. This year over 70 toys were collected for children in our community. |
Milk and Bookies This year Herndon Middle School has done many charities for the holiday season. One of these was Milk and Bookies. Milk and Bookies is a book drive that involved the whole school. Students donated any new or unused books into a red Milk and Bookies box placed in their History or Civics classes. Students could donate any number of books and then they were invited to a Milk and Cookies party for doing so. At the party, everyone hung out together and snacked on milk and yummy cookies. This was such a fun event for the students and a great way to give back to the community.
In the previous drive over a thousand books were raised and students had a wonderful party to reward their hard work and generous donations. Some students complained though that because there were so many donators , at one point there was a shortage of cookies! The drive was extra specially fun because the people who participated in the event got to make buttons, book marks, and lots of other fun stuff with Mrs. Killian. Milk and bookies is a great way to get the students active in their community and it’s a great way to help kids in need. Milk and Bookies happened on the last day before winter break and was a great way to get in the Christmas spirit, a great cause, and a fun treat for milk and cookie lovers. 724 books were donated this time. HMS PJ DAY/READING RALLYby Marcella Thaler
The HMS students were very excited for Pajama Day. One of the days that we get to relax. Each student got to wear their favorite PJs to school. It was a very comfortable day. 8th grader, Maddy Horsetman, commented, “I wore my plaid Herndon PJ pants with my choir shirt from last year”. Also, 8th grader Aldyn Lang stated, “I wore my fuzz pajama pants and a nice comfy shirt.” Both the 7th and 8th graders were happy that the Reading Rally was on the same day. During the day we got to D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) for a few minutes in each class. During that whole week, the drama and choir kids put together a music video for the Reading Rally. It played on PJ day that week. The video is a parody to “Everybody Talks” by Neon Trees. The drama department put a lot of work into it. The student version is called “Everybody Reads”. I hope that everyone at HMS loved PJ day and the Reading Rally. I hope that all students get to read a good book over break. |
